Dr. Michael Amitay

President, CTO and Cofounder

Dr. Michael Amitay
Michael Amitay is a Endowed Professor of Aerospace Engineering, and the Director of the Center for Flow Physics and Control (CeFPaC).  Amitay has been involved in leading-edge research during the past twenty five years related to experimental aerodynamics, fluid mechanics and flow control.  Amitay has been performing meticulous experimental studies extensively utilizing the PIV technique to unveil fundamental physical processes in DoD-, federal-, state-, and industry-sponsored studies.  Amitay’s technical contributions include the adaptation of synthetic jet technology for enhanced aerodynamic performance of lifting surfaces.  This has led to the development of a new flow control approach termed virtual aerosurfaces and another concept for controlling internal flows based on collectively interacting synthetic jet arrays.  His mastery of this complex field of specialization is demonstrated by his published works, which include more than 120 archival and conference publications, and three book chapters.  In addition, three of his conference papers were awarded “best technical paper” in 2000 by the ASME and in 2001 and 2002 by the AIAA.  He also holds two U.S. patents, two PCTs and three provisional patents.  Over the last fifteen years Amitay has been conducting experimental investigation on the feasibility of using flow control (in lieu of control surfaces) for flight control of various vehicle scales.  In 2011, Amitay won the “Supplier of the Year” award from Boeing in the Technology category (work related to the implementation of synthetic jets to enhance the control power on control surfaces for commercial airplanes).

Dr. Amitay leads the research and development of Actasys core technology.
